Match Report

Real Madrid beat city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano for the first time, as Gareth Bale’s 100th goal for the club helped securing a 3-1 win to move them up to second in LaLiga.

Los Blancos claimed a confidence-overfeeding 1-1 draw at Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Wednesday and they brought forth another strong display to beat against Diego Simeone’s men on their own home for the first time since their meeting at the Vicente Calderon in November 2016.

Atletico conceded twice in the first half at the Wanda for the first time, as Sergio Ramos’ penalty added to Casemiro’s stunning opener after Antoine Griezmann had equalised, with a little thanks to VAR.

Madrid looked in control at the back under pressure in the second half and finished off their opponents 16 minutes from time through substitute Bale’s landmark goal, before Thomas Partey’s late sending off.

16′ GOAL! Atletico 0-1 Real Madrid (Casemiro)

Ramos flicks on the corner and Casemiro is left in plenty of space to execute an overhead kick, giving Real a precious lead with 16 minutes on the clock.

Oblak tries to narrow the angle but Casemiro sends the ball flying past the Atletico goalkeeper from the edge of the six-yard box with his acrobatic attempt.

25′ GOAL! Atletico 1-1 Real Madrid (Griezmann)

Griezmann levels up the match with a great finish under the body of Courtois. Correa sends the France striker clean through on goal, with Ramos keeping him onside, but the referee has to refer to VAR as Correa barged Vinicius off the ball.

A quick check confirms that there was too little in the shoulder barge to disallow the goal.

43′ GOAL! Atletico 1-2 Real Madrid (Ramos)

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID! Gimenez catches Vinicius’ leg to halt the Brazilian’s run. The initial contact is made just outside the box but continues into the area The referee points to the spot and stands by that decision after a VAR check.

Nerves of steel from Ramos as he sends the ball into the corner of the net, giving Oblak no chance of keeping it out despite guessing the right way.

54′ DISALLOWED GOAL! Morata’s shot offside

Morata thinks he has equalised against his former side with an impressive finish, but VAR confirms that he was inches offside.

The striker got between Real’s centre-backs and lifted the ball over Courtois from 18 yards, with the opposition keeper caught in no man’s land, and Ramos was unable to keep it out on the line.

74′ GOAL! Atletico 1-3 Real Madrid (Bale)

The three points are heading across the city to the Bernabeu! Bale sweeps the ball across Oblak after taking a touch to set himself once played through by Modric. Atletico carved apart, which we have not said too often this season.

80′ Second Yellow Card! Partey sent off

This is a nasty challenge from Thomas, catching the ankle of Kroos to earn a second yellow card.
